If you work for a Dubai household as a maid, driver, nanny, or in a similar role, being locked out of the villa or apartment while the family is at work, traveling, or otherwise unreachable can be stressful, especially if you are responsible for children, pets, or a task with a deadline. This article covers the practical steps to take in that situation.
First, Try to Reach the Homeowner or Tenant Directly
Before calling a locksmith, try reaching the person you work for or their immediate family by phone. In many cases, they can either come back to let you in, arrange for another authorised person to do so, or, if they are unreachable at that exact moment, at least be aware of the situation so they can respond when a locksmith calls to verify. Having a saved, up-to-date number for them, and ideally a backup contact such as a spouse or adult family member, makes this step much faster.
If You Cannot Reach Them, Contact a Locksmith
If the homeowner or tenant cannot be reached right away, a locksmith can still be contacted, but be aware that the visit will involve a verification step before the door can be opened, since you are not the account holder. Being upfront about this from the start, rather than presenting yourself as the resident, helps the process move more smoothly and avoids confusion on-site.
What to Have Ready When You Call
When you contact us, having the following ready helps speed things up considerably:
- The exact address, including villa or building name and unit or plot number.
- A phone number for the homeowner or tenant, or another authorised contact if you have one.
- Your own name and how long you have worked or lived at the property, since this can be part of what is checked.
- Any relevant urgency, such as children or pets currently inside or outside, so this can be factored into how the visit is handled.
If Children or Pets Are Involved
If children are inside the property alone, or pets are outside in Dubai's heat without shade or water, mention this clearly when you call, since it affects how the situation is prioritised. This does not remove the need for verification, but our technician will factor genuine urgency into how the visit is handled and communicated with the family.
Staying Calm While You Wait
Being locked out while responsible for someone else's home, and sometimes their children or pets, can feel more stressful than being locked out of your own property, simply because the responsibility feels heavier. It helps to remember that this situation is a common one and that our technician has handled it before. While you wait, try to stay in a shaded or cool spot if the weather is hot, keep your phone charged and easily reachable in case the homeowner calls back, and avoid attempting to force a window or door yourself, since this can cause damage that then becomes a separate problem for the homeowner to deal with.
What Happens if the Homeowner Answers the Call but Is Far Away
If the owner or tenant is reachable by phone but is traveling or otherwise unable to return in person, a verbal confirmation from them is often enough for our technician to proceed, once their identity and connection to the address have been reasonably confirmed. You do not need them to be physically present, only reachable and able to confirm the visit.
What Happens if You Cannot Reach Anyone at All
If no one connected to the property can be reached, our technician is not able to proceed with opening the door, regardless of how long you wait outside. In this situation, it is worth checking whether building security, a neighbour, or a community management office has an emergency contact on file for the household, since they may be able to help you reach someone faster than repeated calls on your own.
Deciding Whether to Wait Nearby or Go Elsewhere
If it becomes clear that verification will take some time, think about whether it makes more sense to wait near the property or to run another errand in the meantime and come back once contact has been made. If children or pets are involved, staying close by is usually the safer choice. If you are alone and the wait is likely to be long, letting a neighbour, building security, or a colleague know where you are can be a reasonable precaution, particularly later in the day.
After You Are Back Inside
Once you are back inside, it is worth mentioning the situation to the homeowner or tenant when they are next reachable, both so they are aware it happened and so you can discuss whether it is worth setting up an authorised contact arrangement for the future, which is covered in more detail in our article on setting up an authorised contact list in advance.
If This Keeps Happening
If you find yourself locked out more than once, it is worth having an honest conversation with the household about what would prevent it. This might mean getting your own spare key cut and kept somewhere secure but accessible, agreeing on a backup entry method with the homeowner, or, for households where independent access is needed regularly, discussing whether a keypad or smart lock makes sense for the property. None of these decisions are yours to make alone, since they involve the homeowner's property, but raising the pattern is a reasonable thing to do rather than treating each lockout as an isolated event.
A Note on Staying Professional During a Stressful Moment
Being locked out of someone else's home while you are meant to be working can feel embarrassing, but it is a common situation, and how you handle it matters more than the fact that it happened. Staying calm, being upfront with our technician about who you are and why you are there, and being patient during the verification step all help the situation resolve as smoothly as possible, even if it takes a little longer than a standard lockout would.
