Most lockouts are an inconvenience aimed at the person standing outside. This one is different, because the reason the door will not open is that someone is on the other side of it. That changes the priorities, the sequence of what you should do, and in some cases who you should be calling first.
Decide Immediately Whether This Is an Emergency
Before anything else, establish whether the person inside is safe. A locksmith is the right response to a door that will not open. A locksmith is not the right first response when someone's health or safety is the immediate concern.
Contact the emergency services on 999 without delay if any of the following apply:
- The person inside is unwell, injured, or has fallen, or you cannot get any response from someone you know to be inside.
- An infant or young child is inside alone.
- There is any sign of fire, smoke, gas, or water, or any other hazard inside the property.
- A person inside is distressed, at risk, or unable to move to the door.
Emergency responders are equipped and mandated for these situations in a way that a locksmith is not. Nothing in this article should be read as a reason to delay that call. If in doubt, make the call.
Where a Locksmith Is the Right Call
Once you are confident there is no emergency, the situation becomes a straightforward door opening problem with an additional detail. Common examples in Dubai households include:
- An elderly relative is at home and cannot physically operate the lock, particularly a stiff cylinder or a mechanism mounted awkwardly.
- A child is inside and cannot reach or work the lock, but is otherwise fine and in contact with you.
- Someone inside locked up for the night, left the key in the cylinder, and cannot be woken, while everyone knows they are simply asleep.
- A resident inside has limited mobility and cannot get to the door in a reasonable time.
- Domestic staff secured the property from inside and left before the household returned.
In each of these, no one is in danger. The door is the only obstacle.
Keep Talking to the Person Inside
If you can communicate with whoever is inside, keep doing so. It is reassuring for them, particularly for a child or an elderly relative, and it tells you continuously that the situation has not changed into something more serious. If at any point the person becomes distressed, unwell, or unresponsive, escalate to 999 straight away.
Where the person inside is able to follow simple guidance, ask whether they can see a key in the lock and whether they can remove it. Sometimes the entire problem resolves in a moment. Do not push this if the person is confused, frail, or upset, and do not attempt to talk anyone through operating a mechanism they are clearly struggling with.
Authorisation Still Applies
It is a reasonable assumption that someone being inside makes proof of entitlement unnecessary. It does not. A locksmith opening a door still needs to be satisfied that the person requesting access is entitled to it, and that requirement exists to protect residents rather than to create obstacles.
In practice, being able to show a connection to the address is normally sufficient, for example an Emirates ID with the matching address, a tenancy contract, a title deed, or a recent utility bill. Confirmation from the person inside, where they are able to give it, and confirmation from building management or a landlord both help. Where the situation is more complicated, for example a carer or a relative who does not live at the address, say so when you call so it can be worked out in advance rather than debated on the doorstep.
What to Tell Us When You Call
Mention immediately that someone is inside. It affects how the visit is approached from the outset. Beyond that, the useful details are:
- Who is inside, and whether they are elderly, a child, or have any mobility or health considerations.
- Whether you are in contact with them and whether they are responding normally.
- Whether a key is visible in the lock on the inside.
- The building name and unit number, or villa number and community.
- Whether the door is the main entrance or an internal door.
Do Not Try to Force the Door
The instinct to act physically is strongest when someone you care about is on the other side of a door. It is also the point at which people cause real damage and, occasionally, injure themselves. Forcing a door in an apartment can damage the frame and the surrounding structure, and a door that has been forced may not close or secure properly afterwards, which becomes its own problem later that night.
If the situation is urgent enough that the door genuinely needs to come open immediately, that is precisely the situation the emergency services exist for. If it is not that urgent, it is worth waiting for someone with the right training and equipment.
Think About the Time of Day
This lockout has a strong tendency to happen late at night, because the key is usually left in the cylinder as part of locking up for the evening. That timing matters in two ways. It makes reaching a landlord, building management, or a spare key holder considerably harder than it would be at midday, and it means the person inside is most likely to be asleep rather than ignoring you. Both are worth factoring in before you spend a long time trying to raise someone.
