An app-controlled smart lock does not necessarily unlock from anywhere. Before buying, separate nearby phone access from remote control and ask which connection, hub or gateway the exact model needs. Include setup and account handover in the installation quote.
Local control and remote access are different
Bluetooth can support nearby communication between a phone and a compatible lock. Remote use needs a supported route from the lock to the online service or platform. Depending on the model, that may involve built-in Wi-Fi, a bridge, a gateway or another compatible hub.
Other systems use protocols such as Thread with a compatible smart-home setup. Buying a hub with the right brand name is not enough: confirm that the exact lock, hub, account region and intended feature work together.
Ask what still works without the internet
Some locks support local PIN, fingerprint, card or key access independently of a home internet connection. That does not mean every app function, alert or remote permission change will continue. Ask the manufacturer or installer to distinguish local entry from connected functions for the model you choose.
Also check what happens when batteries run low and which documented backup method is provided. An internet outage and a flat lock battery are different problems.
Agree the setup scope before installation
- Confirm the lock's physical compatibility and operation first.
- Identify the required app, region, compatible phone and any hub or gateway.
- Keep the administrator account under the owner's or authorised manager's control.
- Set up the agreed everyday users and access methods.
- Test nearby access and any purchased remote function separately.
- Review notifications, automatic locking and removal of unwanted credentials.
Enter account passwords yourself when required. Do not send your password, one-time login codes or door PINs through an enquiry form or WhatsApp quote request.
What should the handover demonstrate?
Ask to see normal locking and unlocking with the door in its intended position, how to add and remove a user, how battery warnings appear and where to find the manufacturer instructions. Confirm that the owner can manage the account after the installer leaves.
If you use a smart-home platform, specify the exact function you want. “Works with” can mean different levels of integration and does not establish that every voice command, automation or remote feature is available.
Need help with a lock you already bought?
Send Dubai Locksmith 4U the brand and model, door photos, whether the lock is already fitted and which feature you want to use. We can review the fitting and setup requirements before confirming a quote. For a door that will not open, request lockout assistance and describe the fault.
Questions before you buy
Do all smart locks need Wi-Fi?
No. Requirements vary by model and function. Local entry may work without Wi-Fi, while remote control can need a supported connection or additional hardware.
Does a Bluetooth smart lock provide remote unlocking?
Bluetooth alone is a nearby connection. Remote unlocking requires the additional supported infrastructure specified for that lock and platform.
Model features vary. Check the current manufacturer instructions before purchase. Examples of model-specific requirements: Aqara U200 product information and Yale Linus support. These references do not confirm local stock or inclusion in a quote.
